Multi Line - Linear Motion Battle System
Battles are fought in real-time on a 3D battlefield. Once in a battle, you can switch which character in your battle party you want to control. (Different characters have different strengths -- magic, physical attacks, etc., so pick the one that best suits your fighting style or your enemy.) You can then target any enemy on the battle field and attack.
Any characters that are not being controlled manually are controlled by the AI, but the player can issue orders to the party (such as go all out, don't use magic, fall back and regroup, etc.) in real-time as well as set each individual character's AI pattern (such as attacking flying enemies first, standing back and healing injured party members, etc.). The player can also set up shortcut "hotkey" commands which will make a specific party member stop what they are doing and execute a specific attack or spell right then and there. This can help the player-controlled character create some pretty long and nifty combos with the computer-controlled characters.
Multi-player is easy to set up; just plug in a controller anytime and set the character control to manual in the Tech menu. Each Controller Socket corresponds to a character in battle.
OverlimitsWhen enemies and party members take a certain amount of damage, they will go into overlimits. The Overlimits status will only last a short period of time, during which a variety of effects will occur, such as: all damage recieved is reduced by a certain amount, the character cannot be staggered or knocked down, etc. Also, Sheena must be in Overlimits in order to summon anything besides Corrine.
Unison AttacksEvery successful hit you make on an enemy raises the Unison Attack Gauge. When the gauge is full, you can execute a Unison Attack. It's basically an extra attack that chains into a super-combo involving all characters in your party. The player can choose which attacks the party will do, and certain attacks will combine at the end of the combo-chain to form really powerful finishing-moves.
Technical SmashA technical smash occurs when certain requirements are met when defeating an enemy. These are some of the different types of technical smashes: skill, counter, no damage, 5 hits, 10 hits, etc. Technical smashes affect the types of items that enemies drop. Considering that the requirements for technical smashes are almost the same as obtaining GRADE, earning points toward TS's and GRADE is almost one in the same.
EX SkillsThroughout the game you will find items called EX Gems, which you can attach to your characters. Depending on the level of the EX Gem, you can choose which EX Skills to equip. The EX Skills will give your characters advantages both on the field and in battle, such as running faster in towns and lowering merchant prices to casting spells faster and increasing the chance of a critical hit. Some EX Skills will combine to form Compound EX Skills that give additional advantages to your characters. Each character has their own individual set of EX Skills, so you can customize their skill sets depending on your play style.
