Devil's Arms/Abyssion Guide by Ele-Mental As you should know, Abyssion is the strongest and most feared boss in Tales Of Symphonia. what I hope to do here is to guide you through him, from finding the first Devil Arm, to techniques in battling him.

The Devil's Arms
You've got to have heard of them. The mightiest weapons in the game, given a few playthroughs. To start with, there are only two of these evil weapons available to you when you first enter Tethe'alla; the Soul Eater, and the Evil Eye.

Evil Eye
Ah, Colette's weapons of doom. Possibly one of the easiest ones to get, yet many miss it. You need to travel to the end of the Toize Valley Mine, where the Bacura is waiting for you. Smash the Bacura under the boulder, as you would to continue. However, go down the lift nearby and go to the crumbled ruins of the Bacura, at the far end. Examine this, and a small scene involving Raine and Lloyd begins, and eventually you will obtain the Evil Eye. This is where it gets fun.

Soul Eater
Once you have the Rhieards, and are capable of trans-dimensional flight, fly back to Triet in Sylvarant. Talk to the person on the corner of the market stall as you enter. He will talk about a strange creature being spotted. Go to the next screen (the oasis part). Talk to the guy in the shade of the palm trees. He will also talk about a disturbance outside of town. Leave Triet, and head northwest. Near the large hill northwest of Triet, you should see a triggered skit area. Go into it and prepare for an easy battle with the Sand Worm. If you need an All-Divide for any reason, you can get Colette to steal it. You earn one after the battle anyway. Kill the Sand Worm, and Lloyd will find a weapon, the Soul Eater, Kratos/Zelos' Longsword. Now, you have 2. ^_^

Nebilim's Key, and Nebilim
Getting Nebilim is a piece of pie. Fly to Flanoir, and talk to the guy crouching down with blue hair in the first screen of town, infront of the doorway to the tall building. This is Abyssion, and he will see that you have found some Devil Arms. He then asks you to find the rest, and meet him when you do. He hands you Nebilim's Key and Lloyd's twinswords, Nebilim. Easy huh?

Fafnir
Kratos and Zelos' dagger weapon is easily forgotten about, as it is in the Gaoracchia Forest, remember that place? From the Mizuho entrance to the Forest, head two screens northwest. You should see a bush, which conceals a black chest of Nebilim. Use your light ring to repel the bushes, and examine the chest. Now that you have Nebilim's Key, after a small conversation with Lloyd and Genis, you open it, and Fafnir is yours.

Gates of Hell
The lovely Sheena's battlecards. You need to have fed a potion to the Gnomelette in the Toize Mine, and cooked the other Gnomelette a Curry. After beating the Earth Temple, go to Altessa's house. To your far left you should now come across another Gnomelette, talk to him and he will run to join the others. Head back to the Earth Temple, past the Dragon. You will meet a gang of Gnomelettes, who are looking for one more. The Gnomelette from Altessa's house comes in and joins them, and the Gnomelettes scarper. Go past where they were standing to find another Nebilim chest. Open it to get the Gates of Hell.

Disaster
Ah, another easy one to get, but usually forgotten. Head to Altamira after Regal's talk with Alicia. Rest for the day, but go out at night. Take the monorail to the Casino and Theater. Go up and walk towards the Theater, and you'll come across a man. Talk to him and he will complain that his luck has run out, ever since he found this kendama. Genis quickly points out that it is a Devil's Arm, and you have to buy the weapon off the guy for 1000 Gald, which should be lunch money by now. You now have Disaster, Genis' Kendama.

Diablos
Presea's ax is hidden in one of the most annoying places in the game- the Latheon Gorge. From the second screen, use the big flower that is on the floor to blow you to the foot of the waterfall. After collecting the chests and such, use the big flower to your south-east to fly back to the second level. As you climb the hill, lo and behold, there is another Nebilim Chest. Open it for Diablos, a freaky, but cool looking ax.

Apocalypse
Regal's evil greaves are found in Welgaia. In the area you teleport to when you first arrive, go through the door to the building facing you. Inside, go through the door on the left to find a Nebilim Chest, and Apocalypse therein. One more to get.

Heart of Chaos
Raine's staff helps TONS with her Intelligence. It really is a vital piece of kit. Head to Flanoir, and speak to Abyssion (you should know which one he is by now ^_^). A scene will play where the group think where the last Devil's Arm could be, and Genis says that he thinks that Koton, the old guy from Hakonesia Peak, may have it. So, when you can, fly to Sylvarant and Hakonesia Peak. Go into the hut, and talk to Koton. Raine will trade a relic "he" gave her, years ago for the Heart of Chaos. On to Abyssion! Prepare yourself.

Abyssion's Betrayal
As promised, once you have gathered all nine of these amazing weapons, head to the altar of the Temple of Darkness. Abyssion should be waiting for you. A short scene involving Abyssion taking the Devil's Arms, and unleashing Nebilim onto the world takes place.

The Big Fight Be afraid. Be very afraid. For this guy, you will need to be AT LEAST level 65-70. Stock up on 20 of every gel, including Miracle. Have lots of Life Bottles, and set a C Stick shortcut to the player you control for Revitalise.
Abyssion comes at you with a huge arsenal of player techs and magic, including:
Double Demon Fang
Raging Beast
Super Lightning Blade
Victory Light Spear
Mass Devastation
Swallow Dance
Ring Cyclone
Tiger Rage

Spread
Flame Lance
Gravity Well
Ground Dasher
Explosion
Indignation
Thunder Arrow
Meteor Storm
Prism Sword
Indignation Judgment (Hard/Mania)

When he goes into OverLimit (oh, he will, many times), his spells are INSTANT. Suggestion? Run, until you can hit him properly again. When you see him charging up a spell, run in and Raining Tiger Blade or Beast Sword Rain him, it should make him flinch. He is fast, very powerful in his attacks, and has practically an endless supply of TP (I know, people have used it all up before, but I'm talking in context with just trying to beat him and staying alive). On Normal difficulty, he has 120000 HP, Hard, he has 180000 HP, and on Mania, he has 240000 HP, Needless to say, this is gonna be long.
Sometimes you get lucky fights where he uses his Devil Arm techs more than strong magic, but I can't guarantee your survival through an Overlimit combination of Indignation Judgment, followed IMMEDIATELY by Meteor Storm, both instantly casted. Run like a madman possessed if he is Overlimit and you see a faint flash of a white magic aura.
Combos work well with Abyssion, but bear in mind, he does go into OverLimit at about 55 hits. Or, for arguments sake, soon after a Prism Stars Unison attack. Keep hammering away at him, blocking well when he uses Devil Arm techs. Spam Revitalise, just keep flicking that C-Stick shortcut. Don't rely on Raine if a party member is dangerously hurt and you havent powered up a Revitalise. Use Gels, but mostly try and keep TP levels up on Raine and your attacker. If you have Sheena in your team, use your summons well. Recommendations are Efreet, Volt and Sylph. Shadow is good too. Hell, if you have Origin, use him, Rameesh the sucker!
Eventually, he will die, just keep at him, and your prizes are the Hyper Gauntlet and the Jet Boots, as well as a shedload of Exp and Gald. If you fought reasonably well (don't expect it on your first fight), you could end up with nice healthy GRADE.

Congratulations! Abyssion is no more and the Devil's Arms are yours to power up! How you say? Each kill you make with a character through the game, the potential power for the corresponding character goes up by 1. You don't need to have the Devil's Arm equipped to power it up. All you have to do is kill Abyssion, and all of your past and future kills will unlock the mightiness of these weapons. After three playthroughs, you will end up with an unstoppable set of weapons, hitting thousands for each strike.

However, for that extra challenge, you could try fighting the beast with only one character. Recommendations are Lloyd, Kratos/Zelos, or Sheena. Searing Kratos posted this information about 1 on 1 fights with Abyssion: Kratos/Zelos VS Abyssion This fight should be a moderate challenge as far as duels go. Kratos is slower than some others like Lloyd and Sheena, but the combos he can execute and the variety of his attacks can make up for some of those awkward situations you’ll sometimes get into. Zelos is a bit faster, but still not exactly the fastest one out there. Here is a suggestion of the equipment, items, and EX Skills you might want to use before fighting him with Kratos/Zelos:

Weapon: Last Fencer
Body: Golden Armor
Head: Aifread’s Hat
Arm: Blue Shield
Acc.1: Reflect Ring (also consider: Emerald Ring/Elven Boots) vAcc.2: Faerie Ring

EX Skills

Super Chain
Eternal
Slasher
Spell Charge

With Super Chain, Eternal, and Slasher, you will gain the compound skill Super Blast. This will allow you to chain specials after the sixth hit of Slasher. If you charged a spell (not particularly useful for Abyssion, but good for other fights) then you can still activate it directly out of the sixth hit.

You don’t need to to be perfectly equipped to beat him, but these items are effective for this fight. Your offense and defense should be good enough if you are at least level 75-80 (if you are fighting on Mania, then you should be at a much higher level). The Reflect Ring will reduce the elemental damage you take, useful for those situations where you may get caught in something like Thunder Arrow. Emerald Ring reduces the TP used by 1/3, while Faerie Ring reduces it by 1/2. Elven Boots slightly increase your battle movement speed, which is useful for escaping certain spells like Gravity Well and Ground Dasher.

1. Never use spells. They don’t deal enough damage and you won’t be able to cast them in time. If you have two Mystic Symbols equipped and the EX Skill Spell Charge, you MAY be able to charge one up for use after a combo if you somehow manage to squeeze it in. Either way, the spells are only mid level and aren’t as effective. If you’re using Kratos, Judgment will still take quite a while to charge even with all of the above. Its accuracy, combined with the attack power and the time it takes to cast it aren’t worth it. Instead, use Judgment for your spell cancels.

2. Spell cancel your attacks. These will allow you to string combos together that would theoretically be infinite (they’re not because of enemies falling over, dying, and Overlimit). For those that don’t know, spell canceling is the process of canceling a magic attack into a block. Whenever you use a spell you can cancel it with a block. Spell canceled chains are the process of doing this swiftly, then immediately attacking out of your block to execute another combo. With Super Blast, you can spell cancel even after the sixth hit (without Super Blast, you can only do it after three hits). You are also able to spell cancel specials as well. However, level 3 specials cannot be spell canceled, and level 2 specials can only be canceled with Judgment (since it’s the only advanced spell Kratos has). Level 1 specials, however, can be canceled with mid-level spells, but can also be canceled with Judgment.

3. Don’t try to be flashy. Kratos/Zelos have a number of moves that can appear flashy, but if you misuse them and attempt to make yourself look cool, you will most likely put yourself in danger. Stick to what works. The simple and effective strategies work well against Abyssion, even if you only use two or three specials. You will find yourself racking up damage faster than messing up and getting hit all the time.

Tactics and Combos

Kratos/Zelos can chain Abyssion to rack a lot of damage. If you use backstabbed spell canceled chains, you can combo him all the way across the stage. If you corner him, you can spell cancel Light Spear over and over using Judgment. It’s possible to get well over 50 hits doing this. It will eventually end if you mess up (it requires good timing), and also when he goes into Overlimit.

If you are in a dire situation where you may not be able to defend, you may want to spell cancel. For example: imagine you are jumping over Abyssion and while you are in the air he casts Thunder Arrow. As you land, you will incur some landing lag, which will probably prevent you from using Guardian in time. You also cannot use specials as you land unless you do an aerial attack while landing. As you land, do an aerial sword swing and immediately follow up with a spell, then cancel that into a backstep or Guardian. These types of situations present themselves in a number of manners and spell canceling will usually be the only solution you have.

You can also try avoiding attacks with some of your own. For example, you are at a distance from Abyssion, but relatively close to him. He uses Explosion. Instead of trying to run away or use Guardian, you can run towards him and use Light Spear as the Explosion is expanding. If you spaced it correctly, you will be airborne right above the Explosion, whereas you would get hit if you were standing on the ground. This way you can counter attack Abyssion instead of running and possibly make an opening for combos. Since Light Spear makes him stagger very easily, you will almost always give yourself an opening for a free hit or combo after this (unless you are underleveled).

Sheena VS Abyssion For the quick one who knows how to evade and combo, this fight should be a moderate challenge. Sheena has the best speed and can avoid just about any spell Abyssion has with relative ease, not to mention she can even outrun Abyssion himself. However, she is not as sturdy as the other characters and can take hard damage easily. Your best bet is to avoid things as often as possible instead of blocking them. Take care not to get cornered, or it could be your downfall. You can also use Summon Spirits to raise your stats, but if your damage is anywhere below half then he can probably still kill you even if you are in Overlimit. You may want to consider using these items:

Weapon: Divine Judgment
Body: Shaman Dress
Head: Elemental Circlet
Arm: Shield Ring
Acc.1: Guardian Symbol
Acc.2: Diamond

EX Skills

Sharp-eyed
Dash
Prolong
Add Combo

Using these you can get the compound skills Hard Hit (increases enemy stagger time when hit with standard attacks) and Combo Force (combo hits increase with each hit). Since you can chain at least 10 hits with these skills, Combo Force helps to get that added damage every time you combo him.

1. Limit your spell canceling. Sheena can spell cancel using Purgatory Seal, but each combo hit pushes the enemy back; eventually they will be too far to reach and you will get caught off guard. However if you can get Abyssion in the corner, you can continue to chain multiple spell cancels and continue to attack him until he reaches Overlimit. This is by far the best way for Sheena to rack a horde of damage in one shot. However since he often warps when cornered, you have to catch him in time.

2. Try to avoid blocking moves so much and evade instead. Sheena can easily evade his attacks and have breathing room. Don’t let yourself get cornered and be forced to block. Measure the distance of the stage so you know exactly what position you’re in. Try to stay near the middle.

Tactics and Combos

It’s all about getting him cornered and doing those spell cancels. You can also chain him with four standard hits and then use three specials to do 10 or more hits. Each combo hit deals more damage than the last, and you should be doing some hefty damage with Divine Judgment. When he gets you into Overlimit, make sure you have over half HP before attempting to summon. He can possibly kill you even when you’re in Overlimit, and if you use an item you risk the chance of remaining in the incantation when the Overlimit goes away, allowing Abyssion to interrupt you. When you see yourself flashing, make sure your HP is nearly full. You may also purposely get hit with something like Spread if you want to activate Overlimit without taking too much damage.

Thankyou for reading this, and I hope I have helped you in your searches! ^_^
