Tales of Legendia takes battles back to the series roots by scratching the multiplane fightgrounds of Tales of Symphonia and returning to one-planed battlefieds last seen in Tales of Destiny 2(J). Fights take place on a single plane, with characters and enemies running back and forth, casting spells and using special abilities, otherwise known as eres. Also new to the game is the addition of "grapple" abilities. This special techniques allow Senel to grab enemies and throw them across the field.
In Tales of Legendia, there are three different battle modes.
Manual: Players control all actions of their character in battle.
Semi-Auto: The computer controls some actions, such as jumping, while the player has most of the control.
Auto: The characters is completely controlled by the computer.
When the down button is pushed while standing next to an enemy, the character will pass through the enemy, appearing on the other side. This will make surprise and two sided attacks possible, giving the player a great advantage in battle.
If RI is pressed at anytime during a battle, the game will be stopped and information about the currently targeted enemy will appear, allowing the player the time and information to make an effective strategy.
During battle, it is possbile to stop the game and give the player's CPU controlled partners battle commands, whether it be issuing a spell or using an item. This option allows for even greater control in battle, allowing the player to always be on top of things.
If you happen to be low on HP, or just run into a monster that you can't handle, the game provides an escape option that allows the players to run from battle. In order to do so, the counter at the bottom of the screen must read "0." Unfourtunately, it is impossible to escape from boss battles.
