Tales of Innocence utilizes a battle system that is a combination of the Flex-Range LMBS from Tales of the Abyss with the Aerial LMBS featured in the Tales of Destiny Remake, to create the Dimension Shift LMBS. The player can form a three-person party and battle in full 3D battlefields, where the Free Run system will come into play. In addition, the player will be able to create combos and juggle the enemies in the air for extended periods of time, very similarly to ToDR.
A new feature in Tales of Innocence's battle system is the ablility to quickly switch between party members. For example, if a player is controlling Ruca, and finds themselves trapped and in desperate need of help, they can quickly switch over to another character in the party with the touch of a button, and help themselves instead of waiting for the A.I. to do it.
Unfortunately, this feature does not allow players to switch out characters in the active party for characters in the reserve party, as many fans originally thought it would allow. Instead, it is a quicker way to assist your own character mid-battle.
Another new addition to Innoncence's battles is the the Tension bar, which slowly fills up as characters attack and decreases as they defend and or stay passive. Once a character's Tension Bar fills to its max, they will enter the "Awakening" state. In this state, attack power and speed increase, while spell-casting times and TP consumption decrease. If the player utilizes the Awakening state efficiently, they will be able to further prolong and use the Awakening.
Although, it is also possible to forfeit this prolonged exposure to the Awakening state in order to complete an "Infinity Jam." Initiated by pressing the L and R buttons simultaneously, all able characters in the active party will surround an enemy and beat up on it until the Tension gauge decreases. It is also possible to set up consecutive attacks for combos that will lead to greater damage.
In Tales of the Tempest, all character and enemy models were surrounded by a thick, black outline. In Innocence, the player has the ability to switch this this outline on or off. All units will ship in the "Off" position, but it may be helpful to switch if playing in conditions where visibility is strained, such as bright sunlight.
