Flex-Range LMBS
Tales of the Abyss uses the Flex-Range Linear Motion Battle System. It is the same basic battle system as was used with Tales of Symphonia, but with one important twist. With a touch of a button, a character can now run anywhere they would like to on the field, instead of being restricted to one line a la Tales of Symphonia. Also, FR-LMBS hosts many new features...
Apparently, Namco recieved many complaints due to Tales of Legendia's lack of multiplayer, so they are now boasting as a feature.
In Tales of Symphonia, the player was only only to target specific enemies. To add a new layer of strategy, the player can now target an area of the ground, so if the enemies move, they will still be affected. Also, the works well against large groups of monsters who are huddled together.
Whenever the player uses an elemental attack, Foneme accumilates on the battle field. Once enough foneme has accumilated of a single element, the Field of Fonemes, or FOF, occurs. When inside the affected field, some of the characters attacks may be upgraded to bigger and stronger versions. Likewise, enemies can also utilize the FOF, so players must be aware.
Whenever a character takes damage, they recieve points that accumulate in their overlimits meter. When this meter is full, players can choose to activate it, instead of the system in Tales of Symphonia where overlimits was activated on its own. When in this mode, characters attacks cannot be interrupted, and they recieve a strength increase.
Additional Skills, or AD Skills, are special attack skills such as "free run" and "overlimit" that can be learned only by leveling up. Some AD Skills can only be learned when the character is epuipped with a Capacity Core, which they gain on their adventures. If a character levels up with the capacity core equipped, then they will gain additional stat bonuses and possibly a new AD Skill.
Characters can use fone slot chambers to add special effects to their attacks and magic, such as more damage to enemies or faster recovery time after casting a spell.
All the characters now have Mystic Artes, called Hi-Ougis in the Japanese version. These are secret moves that can be performed when certain conditions have been met.
