What is an FOF?
An FOF is basically a skill that can change a normal attack into a new attack with an attribute.
FOF: How-to-Perform
FOFs are easy to use. Now, if you wish to use let’s say Luke’s Lightning Tiger Blade (FOF link wind to Fang Blade), you would simply have to use Fang Blade when standing in a glowing Wind FOF circle.
Now that is for skills. A spell FOF is a little different. You can activate the FOF link to a spell in two ways. The first way is to stand in a colored, glowing FOF circle and cast the spell. You’ll know it’ll be casting the FOF when the circle vanishes immediately when you start casting. The second way is to have to targeted enemy be standing in an FOF circle. For instance, if an enemy is standing in a Water FOF circle when Bloody Howling hits that targeted enemy, Maelstrom will activate. Talk about “wrong place at the wrong time!” >_> <_<
How come my Water FOF link works when I stand in a Dark FOF link?
Many of you have probably noticed that if you were to use a skill, such as Fang Blade, in a Light FOF circle, Lightning Tiger Blade would activate. It’s simple:
Wind ---> Light <--- Fire
Water --> Dark <--- Earth
Basically, if you use any skill that requires a Water FOF in a Dark FOF, you will get the same new attack. The same is with Earth in Dark, and Wind and Fire in Light. Cool, right?
How do I make an FOF?
Making FOFs is easy. All you need to do is use any spell with an attribute (the only skills that don’t work are: Jade’s Energy Blast, Asch’s Icicle Rain, Asch’s Explode, and Anise’s Miracle Hammer). Then, after the skill hits, the FOF circle will be where the skill hit. However, this ties in to my next topic.
*Also, some attributed attacks like Devil’s Inferno, and Lightning Blade, etc can create FOF circles too.*
Why are my FOF circles white, and not glowing?
Again, this ties in with creating FOFs. Now, spells are either classed as Novice, Mid, or High. Novice and Mid level skills will only make non-colored, non-glowing FOF circles. However, if I were to use the same Mid/Novice level skills TWICE, a glowing, colored, FOF circle will appear.
Okay, example time. Jade’s Stalagmite is a Mid level skill. If I use it, it will create a white, non-glowing FOF Skill. BUT if I use Stalagmite again in the same battle, it will create a glowing, colored, FOF circle.
High level skills create colored FOF circles when they are used.
The point of this is that you’ve probably noticed that FOFs only work when the circle is glowing and colored. But the next point I will discuss can change that.
Wait! You mean I can use an FOF in a non-colored, non-glowing FOF circle!?
The answer is yes. You can. It’s a bit difficult to explain, but it is possible. Now, for my example explanation, I will use Anise and Jade. Let’s say that I want to use Stone Dragon Ascent (FOF link Earth to Dragon Surge), but I don’t want to wait for Jade to cast Stalagmite twice, or wait for Tear to use Invoke Ground.
Okay. In order to perform FOFs in a non-colored FOF circle, I need to access my FSC Menu, which is located in the Battle Menu of the Main Menu. There, I would select the skill I want to be able to use in a white, non-glowing FOF circle (in this case its Dragon Surge). I would then equip the tech with a YELLOW circle. They are known as Sunlight Chambers by the way. Next I recommend the skill be used over 100 times, to guarantee that it works. Finally, when in battle, I would use Dragon Surge in a white, non-glowing FOF circle, and there we have it!
Phew. I hope this guide has helped clear up some FOF questions. ^__^
